Need A Breakthrough?

How to achieve a breakthrough in your reading speed

An average person with a good vocabulary and a relatively normal ability to comprehend information will usually read at a speed of around 300 words per minute: Those who have either developed rapid reading skills or possess a natural ability to speed read do so at 1000 or more words a minute. Most people need to take a course or use a specialized program to attain breakthrough reading speed whilst still maintaining both comprehension levels and the ability to recall facts.

It is considered normal for someone to be able to recall around 60% of the information they have just read, no matter how laboriously. When you learn to read at a breakthrough speed, you will also be learning how to pinpoint words and facts for easier recollection.

There are three main areas those who achieve breakthrough reading speed excel in:

1. Reading More Than One Word at a Time
When children learn how to read, it is a process of first sounding out each letter, then whole words, followed by collections of words that form sentences and paragraphs. Many people stay stuck on this same reading pattern, never moving forward to proceeding words until they have read their predecessors.

Breakthrough reading speed is obtained when groups of words can be seen and understood instantly, being recognized by the reader’s mind as a familiar pattern or group of commonly used words.

2. Alternate Reading Speeds
Having the ability to change the speed of reading according to the amount of information required to absorb is a definite skill for rapid readers. Most courses designed to teach breakthrough reading speed techniques will advise readers to review material before reading more thoroughly. This means initially scanning headings, introductions, subtitles and conclusions.

After a quick review, a reader will have a fair idea as to what the material is about. The next step is to read using the breakthrough reading speed technique that involves alternating pace according to the amount of information. For example a paragraph containing a lot of facts and figure may require a slower pace than others.

3. Don’t be Slowed by the Sounds
Some people move their lips when they read; others actually say the words in their minds. This only slows down the reading process and the mind can comprehend the word much faster than it can be said. Let go of the voice in your head when you read and you will see your speed increase instantly. Breakthrough reading speed will not be reached if readers continue to talk themselves through: An example would be to look at the word STOP! This can be instantly recognized when it is seen and saying it in the mind is delayed and takes at least five times as long.

Any person willing to apply themselves to learning new techniques and letting go of their old reading habits can learn to read at new and faster breakthrough reading speed. Not only does reading become less time consuming, but the ability to recall important information can improve through the process as well.
